Game Description
"Infestation: Astral Survivor" immerses players in a harrowing struggle for survival on a desolate and hazardous planet overrun by vicious insects. As the sole survivor of a catastrophic insect invasion, players must navigate treacherous terrain, solve intricate puzzles, and confront relentless adversaries to uncover the truth behind the planet's dark secrets and secure their survival against insurmountable odds.
Set against the backdrop of an unforgiving and inhospitable world, players assume the role of an astronaut stranded amidst the planet's rugged landscapes and toxic hazards. Armed with an arsenal of weapons and equipped with strategic prowess, players must traverse through barren deserts, rocky canyons, and perilous wastelands infested with insectoid horrors. As they unravel the mysteries of the planet's past, players must harness their wit and resourcefulness to outmaneuver their adversaries and forge a path to redemption amidst the chaos.
Modifications
1. Created objectives that are toggled based on different player inputs / environmental outputs
2. Created 2 puzzles to be solved (One for level 1 and one for level 2). The first puzzle involves powering up the portal by going to a dishtowel, activating it and rotating the power beam towards the portal. There are two dish stations that have to be activated and rotated in order to accomplish this. The second puzzle involves pressure plates that require weight, either player or an asphalt block. If player stands on the pressure plate but moves towards the door, the door closes. The player must use the asphalt block. The second part for this puzzle involves a dangerous leap through a landscape of lava that involves activating platforms that rise to specified heights and also interacting with a computer once at the top to activate a bridge.
3. Created prototype loot chests and implemented two variants. Misc Loot Chest (Health and variety of ammo) and a Boss Key Chest that is awarded after completing the second puzzle.
Course Description
"Infestation: Astral Survivor" was completed as the final project for the Michigan State University Game Design Course 3 - 3D Shooter. Throughout the course, students delved into the intricacies of game design, mastering essential skills in level design, game balancing, prototyping, and playtesting.
With a focus on game asset creation techniques and leveraging industry-standard game development tools such as the Unity 2020 game engine, students honed their abilities to craft immersive gaming experiences. By the course's end, students had created a 3D First-Person Shooter game, equipped with a diverse range of game development techniques essential for crafting captivating and engaging gameplay.
